In the fourth of our series of blogs helping you to start cycling to work, we will look at some practical steps to make the process more comfortable. Cycling is a great way to keep active, save some money and protect the planet. Here are a few of our favourite tips to get you on the road in no time. If you want to be “top of the class”, here’s how to stay prepared no matter what the day may bring.

Town v Country

A country lane is very different from an urban road, so be sure to adjust your plan accordingly. Bumpy fields may require tyres with extra grip while being more visible will be vital if merging with inner-city traffic. At Cadence Performance, we can offer bespoke advice, so get in touch to ensure your kit matches your ride.

Weather and Seasons

Check the forecast before you head out the door – do you need waterproof, sunglasses…or both!? And as the seasons change, make sure you change your kit too: for winter, check your gloves are flexible (you need to squeeze those gears!), while in summer, you don’t want to overheat in too many thick layers.

Be Flexible and Take your Time

You don’t have to cycle in every day. Once per week is a great way to gradually build your routine and grow your confidence – your first few cycles may be more exhausting (and exhilarating!) than you think! Or you could split your route into smaller chunks and walk or use public transport the rest of the way. This is great for tackling tricky interchanges (just check bikes are allowed on your local public transport). And if on the day it doesn’t go to plan, don’t worry! Flexibility is key – sometimes, an emergency means a cycle isn’t possible, but being able to move it to later in the week will stop you from feeling disheartened.

Remember, it might be your first time cycling to work, but you’re not alone – at Cadence Performance, we are always here to help guide you to cycling success.
